How to convert PDF to Markdown

  1. Add the PDF you want to convert by dragging it onto the upload area, or click to browse.
  2. Choose whether to convert all pages or only a range (for example 1-3, 5).
  3. Click "Convert to Markdown" — headings, paragraphs, and lists are detected automatically, and repeating headers and footers are removed.
  4. Download the Markdown file and open it in any editor, note-taking app, or static site generator.

Convert documents to Markdown without uploading them

Converting a PDF to Markdown usually means feeding it into an AI tool or a cloud converter — and uploading the whole document in the process. That is a problem when the file is a draft paper, an internal report, or a contract you need to quote from. CoolPDF does the extraction locally: a PDF engine running in your browser reads the text layer, detects headings from font sizes, rebuilds paragraphs and lists, and hands you a clean Markdown file. The document never leaves your device, so there is nothing to intercept and nothing stored on someone else’s server. It even works offline — load the page, disconnect, and convert away. When you close the tab, both the PDF and the Markdown are gone.

Frequently asked questions

Are images extracted as well?

No. The converter extracts text only — headings, paragraphs, and lists. Embedded images are skipped, so export figure-heavy pages separately if you need them (the PDF to JPG tool can help).

How are headings detected?

By font size. The most common size is treated as body text; noticeably larger lines become headings — #, ##, or ### depending on how much bigger they are. Detection is heuristic, so a quick review of the result is always a good idea.

Why do I get a message about a scanned PDF?

Scans are photos of pages without a real text layer, so there is nothing to extract. Run the file through OCR software first — once the scan has a text layer, this tool can convert it.
